From the windows of this spacious bedroom you can enjoy the view over the distant hills and the green pastures of the property.

History

Joséphine, original name Marie-Josèphe-Rose Tascher de La Pagerie, also called (1779–96) vicomtesse de Beauharnais or (1796–1804) Joséphine Bonaparte, (born June 23, 1763, Trois-Îlets, Martinique—died May 29, 1814, Malmaison, France), consort of Napoléon Bonaparte, empress of the French (1804-1809) and queen of Italy (1805-1809).

Called "the beautiful Creole", Joséphine lived the first 15 years of her life on the island of Martinique, in the large property in which she was born. After her wedding with Alexandre de Beauharnais, a future figure of French Revolution, she arrived in Paris. After several years, her husband, who had been serving in the Revolutionary army, fell out of favour with the left-wing Jacobins and was guillotined in June 1794. Joséphine herself was imprisoned, but, after the coup d’état of 9 Thermidor (July 27) put an end to the Terror, she was released and by the time of the inauguration of the Directory was a leader of Paris society.

Rose frequented high society but couldn't afford this fashionable life and kept on having incredible debt. During this period she was able to catch the fancy of Bonaparte, who she agreed to marry. Passionate, jealous and possessive, young Bonaparte decided to change her name from Josèphe to Joséphine.... a way for him to forget the name Rose by which she had been called by former lovers.

Even though frequently used, the name "Joséphine de Beauharnais" is inaccurate. During her lifetime, she was never called that way.
